Shillong: South West Khasi Hills District organized the first Aqua Festival on November 12 at Iew Mawkyrwat.
Deputy Commissioner of the District R. Lyngdoh graced the occasion as Chief Guest. The programme was attended by fish farmers of the District and the public at large.
While addressing the gathering, Lyngdoh said that this is a Red Letter Day in the history of the District. She reminded one and all of the dignity of labour thereby encouraging the public to start a business of their own and not to depend on government jobs as government jobs has been saturated. She called upon the farmers to come forward and avail the opportunities offered by the Integrated Basin Development Livelihood Programme by registering themselves in the Enterprise Facilitation Centre (EFC) at the Basin Development Unit office.
She also stressed on the importance of hard work and self-sufficiency by citing an example of Tamil Nadu, a developed state in the country. She said that it’s a high time that we produce things that are available in the district and not to depend on others. She said that the Government is ready to aid farmers who are in need of support and in need of realising their goals. She lauded the efforts of the Fishery Department with a hope that more will be done in future.
Lyngdoh also handed over the awards to two progressive farmers viz, P. Marwein of Pyndenumsaw of Mawkyrwat and Rupaly Marak of Ranikor Block.
