SHILLONG: The BJP Meghalaya unit on Friday asserted that it was necessary to restore peace in trouble torn Garo Hills region which is bearing the brunt of militancy, but added that implementation of the Armed Forces Special Power Act (AFSPA) in Garo Hills would not solve the problems.
Speaking to media persons on Friday, BJP State general secretary Dipayan Chakraborty said development has to be brought to Garo Hills to end the law and order problem and added that it was the responsibility of the State government to take the initiative and implement the rehabilitation package for surrendered militants. He also said the State government should hold talk with other outfits which are active in Garo Hills and try and understand their problems even if all their demands cannot be met.
