SHILLONG/AMPATI: Along with the rest of the country Children’s Day was also celebrated in the State on Saturday on the occasion of the 125th birth anniversary of India’s first prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru.
On the occasion the State Education department organised a programme at the U Soso Tham auditorium in the city.
A programme was also held at the Raj Bhavan here to mark the occasion.
Addressing students and teachers at the U Soso Tham Auditorium, Deputy Chief Minister Rowell Lyngdoh remembered Nehru calling him a great writer, idealist, orator and leader who loved children and regarded them as the wealth and future of India.
Earlier a “commemoration run” was organized at 6 am which was flagged off by Chief Minister Mukul Sangma.
Meanwhile, Children’s Day was also celebrated at the Raj Bhavan where 200 children and teachers from 40 different schools of the city were present.
The Governor urged the children to have the courage to face challenges, to carefully choose their destinations and to be productive and responsible citizens of the country.
On the occasion, children from Synod Higher Secondary School and St. Joseph Higher Secondary school along with artistes under the Arts and Culture department presented cultural performances.
Similarly, at Ampati, District Administration of South West Garo Hills along with the children, parents, teachers and the general public celebrated Children’s Day at St. Claret School.
The celebration at Ampati also was marked by cultural performances, patriotic songs and dances and recitation of poems by children of various schools in the district.
Meanwhile, Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee observed the closing function of the 125th birth anniversary celebrations of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru at Congress Bhavan here on Saturday.
MPCC President D.D.Lapang, office bearers of the MPCC and Party functionaries of the DCCs, BCCs, Mahila Congress, Youth Congress and the Seva Dal paid floral tributes to the portrait of Nehru.
