NONGPOH: In the latest case of infringement of Assam government in Raid Nongtung areas in Ri Bhoi District, the SDO (Civil) of Hamren Sub-Division of Assam has ordered the Rangbah Shnong of Madan Umwang village in Meghalaya to stop construction of a building for rearing Eri worms funded by the State Sericulture department, compelling the aggrieved Rangbah Shnong to knock the doors of the Ri Bhoi deputy commissioner and the KSU NKHD for intervention.
The SDO (Civil) of Hamren Sub-Division had, last week, directed the in charge of Ulunkunji Outpost of Assam police to summon Madan Umwang Rangbah Shnong, Blikson Mukhim, to furnish all details pertaining to the construction of the building.
Taken aback by the order of the Assam government official, the Rangbah Shnong submitted a letter to the Ri Bhoi deputy commissioner seeking security to continue the construction work and also for his safety.
The Ri Bhoi deputy commissioner instructed the Rangbah Shnong to go ahead with the construction and also assured that she would take necessary action to prevent any unwarranted incident.
Following this development, a Meghalaya police official went to the village to take stock of the construction work.
However, the next day, local residents of Madan Umwang were shocked to see an MLA and an MDC from Karbi Anglong district of Assam coming to the village and collecting information on the construction of the building.
Taking no chance, the Rangbah Shnong and other village leaders rushed to Nongpoh on Monday and discussed the matter with leaders of the KSU NKHD and later met the deputy commissioner.
During the meeting, the KSU leaders stressed on the need to send police personnel to Madan Umwang for providing protection to the under-construction building and the villagers from the wrath of Assam Police to which the deputy commissioner stated that she would take up the matter with the Superintendent of Police, Ri Bhoi District, for detailing police personnel to the village.
