SHILLONG: A move is on by the State police to confiscate and freeze ‘terror funds’ amassed by Sohan D Shira and his family members.
A police official on Sunday said the recent arrest of GNLA civilian cadre, Malmepa, has shed light on the huge funds acquired by the GNLA self   styled commander-in-chief Sohan, follwing his disclosure to the police about Sohan’s properties including a rubber garden, fish ponds and a newly constructed house at Bawegre village.
At the same time, Sohan has invested money in buying land, coal business and other business, the arrested cadre revealed.
Malmepa further revealed that Sohan has amassed wealth through GNLA, benefiting his family.
Meanwhile, police conducted an early morning search on Sunday at Malmepa’s house and recovered an IED container using metal detectors. Malmepa said it was hidden with him by Sohan.
Police sources informed that the IEDs recovered last year at Ampati and Williamnagar were of the same material as the one recovered on Sunday but the mechanism involved were different. While the IED at Ampati was remote control operated the other used at Williamnagar was a timer device.
Sohan has been using civilian houses to conceal his arms, ammunition and IED materials.
In this connection, police have appealed to the public not to allow GNLA to use their premises to conceal illegal arms, ammunition and IED materials, failing which the house owners are liable for criminal proceedings.
