Umroi expansion delay: Land transfer

SHILLONG: The High Court of Meghalaya has asked the government, the defence authorities and the Airport Authority of India to complete the survey of the land for the expansion of Umroi airport by November 26.
The parties will also have to survey the alternate land to be handed over to the defence authorities within the same deadline.
During the hearing on Tuesday, the Chief Secretary Barkos Warjri appeared in person since he could not appear during the last hearing on November 19.
The Chief Secretary assured cooperation from the state government for the transfer of land in lieu of taking possession of 32 acres of defence land for the expansion of Umroi airport.
The next hearing of the case will be held on November 26.
During the last hearing on November 19, the Court had justified its intervention by stating that “looking at the great public interest involved in the matter, as the expansion of the Umroi Airport which has also been found to be of great strategic importance from defence point of view is pending since 1961 even after allocation and investment of a huge public fund, this Court has taken up the issue on the judicial side”.
