Sports and Youth Affairs dept to inquire into sports firm’s dues

SHILLONG:  In the wake of a pending case against the sports and youth affairs department surfacing for delay in payment of Rs 10 crore, the concerned Minister Zenith Sangma has said that the department would make a thorough investigation into the matter.
Speaking to reporters here on Thursday, Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Sangma said that there may have been some lapses on the part of the department and the same has to be checked. When asked if the current development would have any impact on the South Asian Federation Games scheduled to be held here next year, Sangma asserted that preparations for the event will go o as usual.
“The SAF games will not be affected in any way,” he said.
It may be mentioned that the sports and youth affairs department on Wednesday filed a petition before the court of the Assistant to Deputy Commissioner to stay the earlier execution order of the court against the department for the delay in payment of Rs 10 crore to the city-based sports firm.
It was on November 20 last that the execution order was issued by the lower court following a petition filed by the owner of M/ s Funya Sports, D Marbaniang stating the sports and youth affairs department owes the firm over Rs 10 crore for  supply of various sports materials. The firm has been supplying sports materials including medals, trophies, football jerseys and others since 1992. A lawyer familiar with the case said on Wednesday that the matter dates back to 2003 when a writ petition was filed in the High Court by the firm which then claimed Rs 2. 19 crore for the bill submitted.
