 Editor,

On 15th August, 1947…..why India was divided ? Pakistan was declared as a Muslim country , but India adopted ” SECULARISM” by 42nd Amendment for the people of this country .Now, a section of pseudo-secularists are encashing on the very tolerant nature of the Indian people . A high class travesty ! These brand of intellectuals are not realizing the rapid changing scenario in world politics . If India has to play a part of a group to fight global terrorism and more specifically the ISIS , then the same breed of intellectuals will say , ” INDIA IS INTOLERANT.”

The Art of Giving

Editor,

Kudos to Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan for their pledge of giving 99 per cent of their Facebook shares currently worth more than $ 45 billion to charitable purposes to make a better world for their daughter’s generation. This should be a lesson or two for those haves who shamelessly show off their wealth by spending an astronomical sum of money in marriage ceremonies, pujas and parties in the land which is still alarmingly lowly placed in Global Hunger Index as well as Human Development Index. This greedy creamy layer is so myopic that they do not want to bother about the environment they are making for their children. It is time for all of us to learn from Bill Gates and Zuckerberg and think about the ways in which we can contribute towards ushering in a pollution free, egalitarian and tolerant world.

Anomaly in Vodafone Service

Editor,

I would like to highlight the plight of Vodafone subscribers, who like me have gone through this ordeal while opening mpesa account of Vodafone. In the first week of November 2015 I have opened my m-pesa account through mobile phone Self Registration Service by dialing *400# and the option comes accordingly whereby they asked to give my first name, initial, last name, initial and initials of mother’s maiden name. So I give all the details and the registration was done. They then gave a Start key number through SMS to set the new PIN and the mpesa account was activated. Next day I deposited Rs. 500 in my mobile phone m-pesa account hoping to recharge my phone, DTH, etc. I recharged my phone successfully for Rs.97. But after 1 to 2 hours I got a SMS that my m-pesa account has been closed due to mismatch of data. Then hoping for re-activation I have again done self-registration through phone following the same process. But when I checked my account balance it was zero and the account was subsequently closed citing data mismatch. Here my contention is that, I have completed the registration process as per their direction/instructions but when I contacted Customer Care through a phone number they have cited the same problem of mismatched data was cited. I was asked why I had given initials instead of names. I clarified that I was only following directions. But to my utter dismay they refused to correct their errors and refused to refund the balance amount. While I was interacting with the Customer Care Executive over phone I expected to be guided properly. If the iinitial is not acceptable then why did they give such directions during the time of registration. Recently, I have completed the registration process again through phone on Nov 19, 2015 and found that they have changed the pattern of registration and are asking for the first name, last name and mother’s maiden name, instead of initials for the first name, last name and mother’s maiden name. I would therefore request the concerned authorities/ TRAI to monitor such anomalies and correct the shortcomings that cause undue harassment to the consumers.

Open Butcher Road for two-way traffic

Editor,

You are aware that the traffic jam at Shillong has reached unprecedented heights especially at Civil Hospital Point and Anjalee Cinema Point. The residents staying at Laban, Kenches trace areas while going to Police Bazar or Motphran have to take the main road through Police Bazar. That road is choc-a-bloc with vehicles and it sometimes takes hours to reach Police Bazar. Similarly if vehicles coming from Police Bazaar, Motphran, Umsohsun etc and going towards Laban or Garikhanay take the butcher road it hardly takes 5 – 10 minutes to reach to their destination. So, to minimize the traffic jam, I suggest that the Butcher road which is wide enough to be a two-lane road should be used as a two-way lane. The road narrows down only at the entry behind Sani Mandir, but it is not so narrow that two vehicles cannot cross. The Police have already cleared the area by towing all the damaged vehicles for which we the public are grateful to the Police Department. The Police have already given a statement that this would be a 2-laned road as published in your esteemed paper but, that was open only for a day and then suddenly stopped. I request the officials of the Police Department to take a quick decision to open up the Butcher Road at the earliest so as to make it convenient for the public. This would reduce the traffic jam considerably.

Yours etc.,
