Agartala: The Bangladesh visa office in Tripura will be upgraded to the status of Assistant High Commission within this month.
“This Visa office will be upgraded as the Assistant High Commission of Bangladesh this month itself and the Assistant High Commissioner designate, Sakhawat Hussain, has arrived here from Bangladesh High Commission in Madrid,” First Secretary of the Visa office here, Md Monirujjaman on Sunday said.
He said Sakhawat would join on Monday and then go to Dhaka and would return here soon. The exact date of upgradation of the visa office would be officially announced from Dhaka soon, Monirujjaman said.
Government of India had conveyed its concurrence to the upgradation of the Bangladesh visa office in Agartala to an Assistant High Commission in November 2014 last in response to a request made by Bangladesh.
The visa office was set up in 1973 considering Tripura’s contribution in the Liberation Movement for Bangladesh in 1971.
The state had accommodated more than 15 lakh refugees, which was more than its own population that time. Tripura was also the war headquarters of the liberation soldiers during the war and has a 856-km long border with the neighbouring country.
The visa office issues more than 100 visas to Indians of the North Eastern region for entry into Bangladesh every day. (PTI)
