Shillong Medical College

SHILLONG: Construction of the Shillong Medical College at Jhalupara will begin once the new TB Hospital at Umsawli becomes operational.
Indicating this here on Monday, Health and Family Welfare Minister AL Hek said, “We can hand over the land to the construction agency only after shifting all the patients of the TB Hospital to the new building at Umsawli .”
The State Government had inked a concessionaire agreement with Kolkata-based KPC Group for construction of the Shillong Medical College under the public-private-partnership (PPP) mode on a plot of land measuring 23.8 acre.
The proposed medical college is expected to cater over 2 lakh patients every year.
The State Government is targeting to make the hospital functional by May, 2017, sources said.
Referring to construction of TB Hospital at Umsawli, Hek said that it would take some time to make it fully operational.
“We will shift the patients only when we are fully satisfied with the facilities,” he said.
Attracting IT cos: Referring to attracting big IT companies to the State, Hek said that the Government wanted to invite the   IT companies by holding road shows in metropolitan cities of the country.
He, however, admitted that the proposal has not made much progress.
It may be mentioned that the State Government is keen to invite big IT companies to invest in the State thereby opening huge employment opportunities for the youths of the State.
To make the proposal a reality, 80 acre of land has been allotted to the Information Technology department for construction of the IT Park.
