District child welfare committee ‘summons’ absconding mother

SHILLONG: One Wandashisha Mary Lawrynniang has been instructed to appear before the East Khasi Hills District Child Welfare Committee at the earliest for not claiming her 2-year-old son, Gabriel Lawrynnaing.
K. Marbaniang, Social Welfare Officer, East Khasi Hills, said, “She is an alcoholic. When we asked her to bring the child’s grandmother to take care of the child she disappeared.”
According to Marbaniang, the department does not want to hand over the child to her lest she abandons him again prompting the department to ask for the grandmother.
Marbaniang said that the department has sought the assistance of Childline and other organizations in searching for the mother who has been absconding.
The child is currently under the care and protection of the Government Shelter Home for Girls.

Toddler dies in road mishap

SHILLONG: A two-year-old child died on the spot while five of his family members including three minors sustained injuries when the Mahindra Max pick-up jeep they were travelling in overturned at Mukoh under Thadlaskein Block in West Jaintia Hills District.
The family members were returning home to Sanara from Tamu when the incident occurred on Sunday at around 3:30 PM.
The injured persons including Katshidalin Pale (23, F), Meristila Pale (4, F), Firstborn Pale (5, M), Chirup Lyngdoh (32, M) and a six-month-old daughter of Chirup Lyngdoh were admitted at Jowai Civil Hospital.

Restriction on use of fireworks

SHILLONG: With cases of people using fireworks on the rise, the State government has urged the people to show restrain while using fireworks and other related material during festivals.
In a statement issued to the media on Monday, the State government said that in pursuance of the Supreme Court’s order regarding noise pollution due to fireworks, the Department of Forests and Environment, Government of Meghalaya has called upon the public to restrain the usage of fireworks and other related material during festivals.
The department has also instructed the school and college authorities to educate the students about the ill effects of the fireworks.

Kidnap, molestation bid foiled

SHILLONG: A woman from Tikrikilla, who was travelling from Tura to Tikrikilla, managed to escape an abduction and molestation bid by the driver of a Sumo she was travelling in on November 27 last.
On reaching near Tikrikilla she asked the driver to stop the vehicle but he attempted to molest her and drove the vehicle towards Darengchigre with an intention to abduct her.
The victim somehow managed to escape but the driver took away her bag containing her cell phone, PAN card and ATM card.
The woman has filed a police complaint in this regard.

One dead in freak mishap

SHILLONG: A person succumbed to his injuries when his hand accidentally got stuck inside a stone crusher machine.
Police said that the incident happened on Saturday morning at Patharkuchi in Khanapara when one Raju Tirki (40) sustained grievous injuries when his hand was accidentally stuck inside a stone crusher machine.
He was admitted at Egile Hospital, Guwahati, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Theft at BSF camp

SHILLONG: A case of theft has been reported from the BSF camp at Mawpat.
Police said that as per complaint, unknown miscreants stole two gold earrings, cash Rs.1,500, two LPG regulators, and other items from the house of S.K. Trivedi at BSF Camp, Mawpat.
A police complaint has been filed in this regard.
