FKJGP discovers empty sugar pouches near Mawsynram village

SHILLONG: The Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP) Mawsynram Circle has uncovered what could be a huge scam under the very nose of the Department of Food and Civil Supplies.
Members of the federation discovered a huge quantity of empty plastic packets of ISS Grade sugar supplied to beneficiaries at subsidized rates through respective Fair Price Shops.
The empty plastic pouches were found dumped at a place called Ryngkoh Shrieh Khadphra near Mawsynram.
In a statement issued to the press on Tuesday, the FKJGP revealed that there were over 5000 plastic pouches dumped in the area and the federation suspected that miscreants must have emptied the sugar and marketed the product at the market rate.
The 1 kg pouch of sugar is sold to FPS beneficiaries at Rs 20 per kilo whereas the cost of 1 kg of sugar in the open market is almost double of the same.
The organization alleged that the plastic pouches were dumped in the area weeks earlier and there was no input on the people involved in the scam.
In this connection, the FKJGP members met the BDO of Mawsynram Block urging him to look into the scam and also urged the East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner to conduct an investigation and nab the culprits at the earliest.
The members have also called upon the people to be watchful whether sugar has been distributed through the respective Fair Price shops.
The FKJGP observed that the scam was the reason behind complaints that people were not getting sugar and other commodities from the Fair Price shops.
The organization has also slammed the motive of the miscreants to harass the people, especially the poorer section of the society.
