SHILLONG: Immoral trafficking of girls and young children is a matter of grave concern for one and all, but thankfully the menace seems to be under control in Meghalaya.
As per statistics provided by the Police department, 20 cases of immoral trafficking were registered under the immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act on women & children from 2001 to 2012.
The police statistics also revealed that 14 victims were rescued in the same period.
The statistics also revealed that four cases were reported in 2013 and three in 2014. No case of trafficking has been reported in the State till September this year.
Reacting to the police data, CSWO president Agnes Kharshiing asserted that immoral trafficking of girls was prevalent in the State, especially in Garo Hills where young girls are being trafficked. She also spoke of a recent case where a minor girl was trafficked to Silchar in Assam.
On the other hand, East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police M. Kharkrang said there are not many cases of trafficking, at least in his district, and added that very few cases have been reported from elsewhere in the State.
