SHILLONG: Bringing in Christmas cheer, Governor V. Shanmuganathan on Monday highlighted that Churches have shown compassion and dedication by serving the people, while also taking cognizance of the problems faced by people ranging from unemployment, infant mortality rate and issue of single mothers, and expressing hope that such issues will be alleviated in the years to come.
As part of the pre-Christmas celebration at Raj Bhavan here, Christmas carols were performed by the Choir Groups of Choral Evangelist Choir, Mawlai, Assam Regimental Centre and United Churches’ Association.
In another event, Sadar Police Station in collaboration with Batesi TV, distributed blankets, cakes and other necessities to 17 poor families at a function held at the hall of the Police Station.
These families were drawn from Mawpat, Oakland Bivar Road, Keating Road, Mawlai and Polo.
East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police M. Kharkrang, while speaking as the chief guest, said, “Christmas is not about new clothes or cakes but it is the season to serve one another. While there are numerous poor families and we are not able to help them all at once, efforts are on to identify and help them as well.”
Pointing out that the initiative to help the people was an attempt to strengthen the police-public connection he lauded the services of Batesi TV in identifying the poor families.
He expressed hope that other police stations will follow the footprint of the Sadar PS.
Christmas songs were sung to enrich the occasion.
