Mukul skips funeral ceremony due to ill health
SHILLONG: Thousands of people on Monday paid homage to veteran Congress leader and former Minister Friday Lyngdoh who was laid to rest.
Lyngdoh, 87, who passed away on Thursday last, represented erstwhile Mawkhar (now North Shillong) constituency in the State Assembly.
A sea of humanity gathered near Lyngdoh’s house at Mawkhar to bid adieu to the popular leader, who had headed Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC).
People from all walks of life, including public representatives and government officials, paid homage to Lyngdoh by laying wreaths on his coffin. Prominent among them were the MPCC president and Advisor to the State government DD Lapang, Home Minister Roshan Warjri, WHD Syngkon, Mawkhar headman etc.
Sports Minister Zenith Sangma attended the funeral ceremony on behalf of his brother Chief Minister Mukul Sangma.
The Chief Minister could not make it to the funeral ceremony due to ill health, Zenith later informed.
On behalf of the Chief Minister, Zenith read out the condolence message which said that Lyngdoh was a leader accessible to all.
Lapang read the message of Congress president Sonia Gandhi, which recalled the contributions of Lyngdoh for the welfare of the people of the state.
Later, his mortal remains were taken to the Mawkhar Presbyterian Church before being laid to rest at Mawkhar cemetery.
