Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said Union Minister of State for Sports and State BJP President Sarbananda Sonowal’s statement terming Assam police force as ‘Congress’ fiefdom’ is  derogatory and despicable.
“Sonowal’s statement castigating the police force by terming it as Congress’ fiefdom is derogatory and despicable. Such a comment is a slur on the image of the police force that has been always at the services of the people.
It demoralises the morale of the police force that has been performing exceedingly well despite confronted with different challenges,” he said, adding that the improvement in the law and order situation in the State even drew applause from Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh.
Gogoi pointed out that the police machinery has never been subjected to political pressure and given a free hand to deal with any exigency.
“The State police administration has been given a free hand and never used for political purposes. The performance of the State police force over the years in countering insurgency and other crimes speaks volumes and this is simply because there is no political interference in the running of the police force,” he said.
Gogoi further said that the open attack by BJP leaders and workers on Congress workers at Rajiv Bhawan on Monday and the charges framed against them by the court of judicial magistrate is a pointer how the State BJP under the leadership of Sarbananda Sonowal had been trying to create lawlessness.
“Under the leadership of Sonowal, the State BJP has started degenerating with its leaders and workers throwing democracy to the winds by openly attacking Congress workers and thus creating lawlessness.
Never before such incidents happened in the political history of Assam. It seems Sonowal, out of sheer frustration, has been out on a vilification campaign of the State Government to hide the failure and wrong doings of the BJP-led NDA Government at the Centre towards the people of Assam.”
Both Gogoi and Sonowal have been trading charges following Monday’s clash between BJP and Congress workers in front of the state Congress headquarter here. So far police have arrested only BJP leaders and workers while no one from the Congress party has been booked much to the chargin of the BJP.
