Man jailed for raping disabled woman in Manipur

Imphal:  A 50-year-old man found guilty of raping a disabled woman and sentenced to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment. Imphal West district and sessions court judge M. Manoj Kumar also ordered convict S. Naoba to pay a fine of Rs.50,000 or undergo further imprisonment for six months in case he fails to pay the fine. The government was also directed to pay a compensation of Rs.2 lakh to the family of the then 21-year-old woman, who died in 2013. The state women’s commission was also directed to render assistance to the family. Ng. Tejkumar, director of prosecution, Manipur, said Naoba of Uripok Achom Leikai area in Imphal had raped the woman on August 3, 2006. Police, however, framed the chargesheet only on Janauary 14, 2013. “This is the longest term of imprisonment for rape after the amendment of Section 376 of the Indian Penal Code,” Tejkumar said. “A clear message has been given that criminals cannot commit crimes of this heinous nature and escape. It should be a lesson to one and all.” On Thursday, police had tightened security at the court complex, and no information was released about the accused being presented in court. In the past, women vigilantes turned up in court and manhandled people accused of rape and other sexual crimes. (IANS)
NSCN- K cadre killed in exchange of fire in Dimapur
Kohima: One NSCN cadre was killed in a gunfight with troops of 18 Assam Rifles in general area of Zhutovi village, under Dhansiripar block of Dimapur district. Assam Rifles sources today said, after receiving inputs of presence of NSCN (K) cadres, two patrols of Assam Rifles personnel were sent to the area last evening. When the troops reached a rubber plantation area, three persons were reportedly carrying extortion from truckers.  As the personnel approached the spot and began to question the trio, two of them fled from the area, while the other one took out a pistol and fired at them.  In the exchange of fire, the patrol leader shot the suspected NSCN cadre, the official sources said.  One 9 mm pistol along with cash was recovered from the deceased, while the body was later handed over to police.  However, till this morning, it could not be ascertained that which group the deceased belonged to and further investigation was on. Kohima reeling under severe cold for past four days
Kohima: Kohima, the capital town of Nagaland, at an altitude of 1,444.12 meters, is reeling below one degree celsius since Monday night, when the minimum temperature came down to 0 degree celsius and the frozen water drops were visible over the tree and plant leaves before the sunrise.
