SP thanks people for incident-free celebrations

SHILLONG: From prayers to picnics and midnight swims to concerts, Shillongites celebrated the New Year in varied ways.
Prayers and wishes continue to pour in as the festive spirit lingers in the beginning of the New Year.
While the New Year celebration started from midnight of December 31 with dip into the icy water of Crinoline swimming poll by some enthusiasts under the banner of Forever Young Club, concerts and variety of entertaining events marked the celebrations at Polo Parking Lot which was attended by a large crowd.
People burst crackers at the stroke of midnight on January 1, while the state government sounded the siren announcing the New Year.
At a time when majority of people were engaged in public celebrations, there were many who chose to spend a few hours of the day in churches.
Many faithful attended church services on December 31 evening, and there were special services in the churches on January 1 too.
Another way of celebrating the New Year was by way of arranging picnic in parts of city and outskirts by group of friends and family members.
Since there was pleasant weather on January 1 and 2, large crowd thronged at various tourist spots in state.
With the availability of latest means of technology, New Year messages flooded the cell phones as people chose sending wishes in the form of pictures, graphics, audios and videos via WhtsApp.
Meanwhile, East Khasi Hills SP M Kharkrang thanked the people of the city for ensuring that the Christmas and New Year celebrations went incident-free in the city.
Kharkrang claimed that during Christmas and New Year celebrations, there was no incident of rash and negligent driving leading to accidents. “The late night checking of vehicles by police helped prevent drunk driving,” the SP said while thanking the people for ensuring that the festivities went incident-free.
