SHILLONG: The ready-to-function abattoir at Mawlai Mawiong will be inaugurated in February.
Speaking to media persons here after conducting an inspection of the site on Thursday, Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Minister, Deborah Marak expressed satisfaction at the completion of the project.
Marak, however, said that the slaughter house cannot be inaugurated until the butchers, who will work at the slaughter house, are trained for the job.
“If things go as planned, the project will be inaugurated in February,” Marak said.
Reacting to a query about the pollution control measures to be adopted at the abattoir, Marak said that effluent treatment plants have been constructed even as necessary clearance certificates were obtained for the project.
When asked if the presence of Marten dumping yard near the slaughter house would have adverse affects on it, Director, Animal Husbandry and Veterinary, Dr. J. S. Jyrwa replied in the negative.
“A milk processing unit also lies next to Marten and it has not been affected by the dumping ground,” Jyrwa said. The abattoir has been constructed at a cost of Rs.22 crore by the Rapsang Group of Companies, Shillong, in collaboration with Real Growth Company, Chennai.
