SHILLONG: “Shillong has a very good chance of clearing the final selection for the Smart city plan,” said Urban Affairs minister Ampareen Lyngdoh.
Lyngdoh said that the empanelled agencies of the Government of India had already conducted several exercises in Shillong  for the Smart city plan.
“Once the report is ready, I will look into it,” she said.
Shillong is one of the 98 cities which the Central government had selected for its smart city project and the smart city project is an area based approach which aims to re-develop an area with modern amenities. The proposed smart city will have smart public transport system, IT enabled solutions and other   features and if the plans works out then such features will be applied in the entire city.
According to Lyngdoh,   if the proposal for developing Shillong as smart city gets approval, then   the Government will have to make sure that the plans are implemented without any delay as delays may lead to complications.
The State Government has also received some budgetary support for initial work.
With an aim to achieve “inclusive growth”, the Smart City Mission promotes integrated city planning, where the government’s policies such as Swachh Bharat Mission and Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation complement each other.
