SHILLONG: Residents of Khliehshnong, Sohra, have refuted claims of officials of the Meghalaya Basin Development Authority (MBDA) that the catchment protection works taken up at Wah Shari, Khliehshnong were implemented by MBDA, and have clarified that the villagers were involved in the project prior to MBDA’s involvement.
The MBDA claimed that it had implemented the project meant to supply water to 1000 households of Khliehshnong and that no such conservation works were undertaken before.
The residents went on to clarify that they had participated in the implementation of the project from the start until its completion and inauguration by the deputy chief minister in charge Soil & Water Conservation on September 18, 2013, and at the same time stated that the project was supplying water to the new habitations of Wah Shari area and not to the entire population of Khliehshnong.
On the claims of the MBDA that no other water conservation project was implemented anywhere before, the residents termed it as false and baseless while adding that numerous springs under Khliehshnong had been tapped and the water conserved in the form of water harvesting, spring tapped chambers etc.
