NONGPOH: Expressed discontentment over the present state of affairs along the Jorabat-Umiam expressway, the KSU’s North Khasi Hills District unit decided to oppose the inauguration of the toll gate at Pahammawlein village in Ri Bhoi unless safety measures are taken to avoid mishaps along the expressway.
The KSU members met the Ri Bhoi Deputy Commissioner demanding that completion certificate should not be handed over to the implementing agency of the expressway.
During the meeting with Deputy Commissioner, Pooja Pandey the KSU members expressed disappointment over the fact that the Umsning Bypass was still a non starter even though the District Administration has handed over the land to the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) for the purpose.
The KSU also expressed unhappiness over what they called faulty construction of the Jorabat-Umiam expressway which has seen heavy landslides, water-logging etc., in recent times. According to the KSU, unscientific execution of work and negligence by the implanting agencies, have caused the current anomalies.
“We will continue to oppose the inauguration and functioning of the toll gate unless safety measures are taken to make the expressway safe for commuters,” the KSU said.
