SHILLONG: Chief Minister Mukul Sangma has asked Deputy Chief Minister in charge, PHE, RC Laloo to take measures to ensure that safe and potable water is supplied to the people of Shillong.
The direction of the Chief Minister comes in wake of the controversy surrounding the nature of water being supplied to the residents of the city through the Greater Shillong Water Supply Scheme.
“I have asked the concerned minister to take measures to satisfy people about the quality of water,” Sangma said.
It may be mentioned that the KHNAM Youth Wing took the initiative of taking the sample from the clear water storage of the Greater Shillong Water Supply Scheme located at 4½ Mile Upper Shillong to King Edward VII Memorial Pasture Institute and Medical Research Institute, Shillong, where experts found the pH level of water to be 5.7 and declared the water acidic and unsafe for human consumption.
The Chief Minister, however, said that even before the entire issue cropped up, he had asked the PHE department to take measures to ensure that safe water is provided to the residents as people had time and again raised their apprehension about the quality of water being supplied in Shillong.
Sangma also said that if there is any flaw in the water supply, it needs to be corrected.
“The Government is concerned about the health of the people,” he added.
