SHILLONG: Enilla Ch Marak, Aking Nokma of Danakgre Aking which includes the main town of Tura has written to the State government through the Deputy Commissioner Parvin Bakshi to re-survey the 300 bighas (100 acres) of land acquired by the government in mid 70s for new extended township and residential complex at Dakopgre.
The residents around these areas are living in anxiety as the State government has now claimed these areas which were not officially acquired under Land Acquisition Act 1894 but leased out under specific requisition terms as mentioned in Gazette of 1975.
The land measuring 746 bighas (from Goanang to Dakopgre) was leased out and not acquired. This is specifically mentioned in the 1975 Meghalaya Gazette.
According to Marak, the State government issuing eviction notice in scheduled areas for Scheduled Tribe is unconstitutional and unwarranted.
Hence the Aking Nokma expressed her desire to reclaim the land which falls under 746 bighas within the Danakgre Aking. She also urged the Government not to proceed with eviction in her Aking land without her consent.
