SHILLONG: The finance and law departments have cleared the proposal of the District Council affairs department to hold elections to the seven vacant posts in the district councils.
The seats fell vacant after the state government on October 1 passed a Bill to prevent MLAs from holding the posts of MDC.
Following this, seven legislators HDR. Lyngdoh , Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit, Phlastingwell Pangniang, Brolding Nongsiej, Metbah Lyngdoh and Sanbor Shullai, all from KHADC and  , Stephanson Mukhim from JHADC resigned as MDCs.
However, KHADC CEM P N Syiem is yet to relinquish any of two posts of MLA and MDC.
A senior government official said that the district council affairs department hopes to complete the process of election by February.
However, the official said that the Cabinet will take the final decision.
Though there was a plan to list the matter during the cabinet meeting held on January 20, it did not materialize as the finance department cleared the proposal to hold the polls only on the same day.
The department hoped that the matter will be taken up by the Cabinet in the next meeting.
The financial involvement for conducting the polls is around Rs 2 crore.
