SHILLONG: Home Minister Roshan Warjri has expressed concern over the problem of unemployment in the State.
Speaking at the concluding function of the year-long Platinum Jubilee celebration of the Dorbar Shnong Mawlai Mawroh on Friday, the home minister feared that with the population of the State increasing every year, hopes to get employment in government departments seem next to impossible.
In this context, Warjri said that the need of the hour is to make the youth understand the importance of ‘dignity of labour’. She was of the opinion that the youth can grow only if they learn to make use of their talents and skills in the right perspectives thereby contributing to the economic growth of the State and the nation as a whole.
Commenting on the current law and order situation in the State, Warjri said, “We cannot change the past but we can very well shape our future by ensuring that the youth are secure and are not being led astray. Peace is imperative which is why we need to work together, gathering all the cooperation and support from the public.”
Echoing similar sentiments, local legislator Embhahlang Syiemlieh said that with India having a huge population of the youth, the potentials that lie within the country is immense, adding that this potential must be used in the right direction so as to ensure a sustainable livelihood of the people as well as the growth of the country.
“The government needs to open  up more platforms for the youth to express themselves. More needs to be done to ensure that the youth are given enough opportunities to grow,” he added.
“We live in a cruel world where the youth are subjected and lured into anti-social activities thereby affecting the social and economic growth of the State,” observed local MDC P.T. Sawkmie.
The year-long Platinum Jubilee celebration of the Dorbar Shnong Mawlai Mawroh concluded here on Friday amidst pomp and gaiety.
The celebrations which started on January 24, 2015 finally came to an end with an impressive function at the Indoor Stadium, Mawlai Mawroh, in the presence of the home minister, who is a resident of the locality.
The gathering also witnessed an entertaining comedy show put together by SBUK.
The function was also attended by S.D. Khongwir, president, Mawlai Town Dorbar, headmen of various localities of Mawlai and executive members of the Dorbar Shnong Mawlai Mawroh, besides other.
75 years ago, the executive members of the Dorbar Shnong of Mawlai Mawroh decided to separate from the Dorbar Shnong of Mawlai Mawdatbaki and subsequently formed its own committee under the leadership of the then Rangbah Shnong (L) Besingh Lyngdoh Nongpuir.
The year-long celebration managed to bring together people from every blocks of the locality through games, cultural programmes and the like. Various programmes and sports both indoor and outdoor games were held during the course of the year.
