Seven-day long World Peace Yagna concludes
GUWAHATI: The seven-day long World Peace Yagna organized on the occasion of Diamond jubilee of Sri Digambar Jain temple at Fancy Bazaar and Golden jubilee of Panchakalyanak Pratistha Mahotsav concluded on Sunday. Assam Governor P.B. Acharya recently inaugurated the Yagna on January 17 and it witnessed participation of lakhs of devotees from other northeastern states and different parts of the country. The Panchakalyanak Mahotsav and the World Peace Yagna was held under the guidance of Jain saint Sri Punya Sagarji Maharaj, who had arrived in Guwahati after crossing a distance of over 720 kms from Barsoi in Bihar. Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, who had also participated in the Mahotsav . General secretary of the Reception Committee, Kishore Kumar Jain said that several colourful procession like Ghat Procession have been organized during all days of the Mahotsav and that lakhs of devotees of the Jain community and others also took part in the weeklong Mahotsav, which was carried out in the most disciplined and peaceful way. Several cultural programmes have also been organized during the Mahotsav which included Kavi Sammelan by hosted by famous poet, Sri Chandra Sen Jain of Bhopal and other distinguished celebrities from different parts of the country.
BJP MLA Kh Joykisan Singh arrested for defying curfew
Imphal: BJP MLA Khumukcham Joykisan Singh was arrested today for defying prohibitory orders under CrPC section 144 imposed here since Friday evening, after trouble broke out in the Thangal Bazar area over a dispute regarding construction of a temporary market shed. The Police had to use water cannon and lobbed tear gas shells to disperse the protesters opposing construction of the market shed at Thangal Bazar, the main marketing centre of Imphal, controlled by women and popularly known as Women Market. Two major market sheds, Lakshmi Market and New Market, were badly damaged in the January 4 earthquake. Following the arrest of Joykisan Singh, large number of protesters took to the streets in the Thangmeiband, Nagamapal and Thangal Bazar areas of Imphal West district defying the prohibitory orders. Two NSCN(IM) cadres arrested
Haflong (Assam): Two NSCN(IM) cadres were arrested during a joint operation by security forces in Dima Hasao district, an army spokesman said here on Sunday. Acting on a tip-off, a joint team of the 43rd Assam Rifle and police made the arrest from Kashipur and Lodi villages while they were carrying out extortion activities in the area yesterday, he said. A pistol along with seven rounds of live ammunition were recovered from their possession. The militants were later handed over to the Haflong police station, he said. (PTI)
