SHILLONG: Security agencies in the State are carrying out a threat assessment in view of the upcoming Republic Day celebrations on Tuesday.
Police sources said the district superintendents of police have been asked to deploy all the additional forces available at their disposal including BSF, CRPF and battalion forces to ensure peaceful Republic Day celebrations.
“Police is on alert since we cannot rule out the possibility of GNLA indulging in adventurism,” the official said while adding that security forces have been asked to remain on alert especially in areas like Williamnagar, Tura and Baghmara.
Reacting to a query on security threats in Khasi Hills, the officials denied that there was any specific threat but added that police are on alert in certain pockets of West Khasi Hills and South West Khasi Hills as members of some splinter groups have been spotted in those areas.
Speaking on the security aspect, Meghalaya DGP Rajiv Mehta asserted that there will be normal augmentation of forces and officers during the Republic Day celebration.
He also said that there will be intensified patrolling and checking to ensure that the celebration passes off without a glitch.
