Gayle, Russell likely to be named in Windies WorldT20 squad
Bridgetown: Batting sensation Chris Gayle and all-rounder Andre Russell are likely to be included in the 15-man West Indies squad for the Twenty20 World Cup, to be hosted by India. Some media reports on Wednesday announced the squad without Gayle and Russell, sparking some speculation on social media but the Jamaican pair are likely to be named for the March 8 to April 3 tournament, reports CMC. The squad, which is yet to be named officially by the West Indies Cricket Board, includes embattled off-spinner Sunil Narine who is currently banned from bowling internationally. However, Narine is expected to undergo testing on his action at Loughborough University in England next month, before confirming his spot on the side. All eyes will be on Gayle, however, especially after he sparked controversy during the recent Australia Big Bash with his now infamous live television interview where he appeared to openly flirt with Channel TEN’s reporter Mel McLaughlin. Persistent rain washes out NZ-Pakistan second ODI
Johannesburg: The second one-day international between New Zealand and Pakistan has been abandoned without a ball being balled after persistent rain left the outfield too wet for play at McLean Park in Napier on Thursday. According to Sport24, umpires Bruce Oxenford and Billy Bowden decided to call off the game as there was no sun to dry the waterlogged outfield. New Zealand are leading the three-match series 1-0 after winning the opening ODI in Wellington by 70 runs.
Aguero heads Manchester City into League Cup final
LONDON: Manchester City reached the League Cup final after recovering from a shaky start as Sergio Aguero’s brilliant header sealed a 3-1 win over Everton in the semi-final second leg on Thursday to clinch a 4-3 aggregate victory. Ross Barkley’s bullish run and powerful finish put Everton ahead on the night after 18 minutes, but the lead was soon wiped out when Fernandinho’s effort was deflected into the visitors’ net. If that was a lucky break for City, they were even more fortunate when Kevin de Bruyne side-footed them level in the tie after replays showed the ball had gone out of play before being cut back for the Belgian to score after 70 minutes. City’s third goal, however, was all about the brilliance of striker Aguero, who angled a superb header into the corner to set up a final against Liverpool on February 28 at Wembley. (Reuters)
