SHILLONG: With the much awaited South Asian Games round the corner, security measures are being implemented in full swing, informed Director General of Police Rajiv Mehta.
“Preparation is fine and adequate number of manpower is being deployed for the Games,” he said.
The police chief also asserted that deployment of forces in Shillong will not have any effect on counter insurgency operations in Garo Hills.  The Games will begin in Shillong on February 5.
Efforts on to fully enforce NGT ban
The State police chief, meanwhile, said efforts to halt the rampant illegal coal transportation in certain parts of the State like East Garo Hills and East Jaintia Hills where coal laden trucks are regularly being seized in violation of the NGT ban, are being hampered in view of lack of manpower.
“We need more forces to implement the NGT ban completely and Garo Hills is a big problem as most of the forces are committed there,” Mehta said.
He further stated that the Police department was making efforts to stop illegal coal transportation by conducting surprise checking on a regular basis.
