New Delhi: In a security lapse, a 20-year-old woman on Wednesday broke barricades and threw a flower pot in Rajpath in the heavily guarded Raisina Hills area less than a minute before Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s convoy was to pass through.
The woman identified as Neena Rawal, a resident of Sahibabad in Uttar Pradesh, was detained and questioned at the Parliament Street police station before she was taken for a medical check-up.
The incident took place at around 2:10 PM when Modi’s convoy was leaving from South Block, leaving the security personnel in the area into tizzy. The woman was part of the crowd which was asked to clear the road and assemble at a pavement near Vijay Chowk as PM’s convoy was to pass through the area. She became furious when police told her to move further aside, DCP (New Delhi) Jatin Narwal.
The woman entered into an altercation with the security personnel and pushed down three barricades. By the time the police could stop her, she ran towards Raisina Hills where she threw a flower pot on the road, less than a minute before the convoy passed through, he said. Rawal was whisked away from the spot immediately and questioned.
On being questioned, she told the police that some hooligans had tore her marksheet and harassed her at her native place, for which she had lodged a complaint there but the police allegedly took no action. She claimed that she had come here for justice, the police official said.
But when she was asked whether she knew about whose convoy was going to pass through the route, she said she had no idea about it. She took a metro train from Ghaziabad and arrived in Delhi in the morning. When asked what was her purpose of visit, she couldn’t give a clear answer, the official said.
“We are examining the matter. The woman’s statement has been recorded and she has been taken for a medical examination,” Narwal added. (PTI)
