NONGSTOIN: The Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) Nongstoin Circle on Monday conducted an inspection of the Shakhambari Ferro Alloy Private Ltd., Riwiang, and found that waste discharge from the company was polluting the Riwiang river.
The HYC also found out that the factory has been running for years but there has been no developmental activities carried out by the management in the form of constructing schools or community halls in the areas as promised by C. Mahanta, Vice President of Ferro Alloy Private Ltd., during its launch on April 28, 2010.
The HYC also found out that the waste discharge from the factory has been polluting the Riwiang river and the bad smell emanating from the waste dumping ground poses threat and health hazards to the public especially those residing near the factory site, but no corrective steps have been taken by the authority.
During the inspection, the manager of the company assured  the council that it would take action on the demand related to eliminating the health hazards.
He also said that even though the factory has started functioning, the NGT ban on coal mining does not allow the factory to function for more than two to three months in a year.
Lumlang Kharsyiemlieh, president of the HYC Nongstoin Circle, has threatened to file a PIL against the factory if they failed to respond to their demands within one month.
