Teenager stabbed to death by brother-in-law
JOWAI: In an unfortunate case, a fifteen-year-old boy identified as Ronaldo Nongbah of Barato village in West Jaintia Hills was allegedly stabbed to death by his brother in law indentified as Kyrioo Dhar.
Sources informed that on Sunday, one person had died in the village and both Nongbah and Dhar visited the family of the deceased. At around 10 PM, Dhar had an argument with his teenaged brother-in-law while they were playing carom board and was hit by the latter.
Later, on their way home, Dhar stopped his car and asked his brother-in-law to come out of the car for a fight. As soon as the boy came out of the car, Dhar stabbed him on the stomach with a sharp weapon.
The boy’s family members and other villagers rushed him to Jowai Civil Hospital where the doctor declared him brought dead.
After the incident, the accused surrendered at Jowai PS where police registered a case under Section 302 IPC and forwarded him to the court where he was remanded in three days’ police custody. The accused has been kept locked at Nartiang PS.
Synjuk hails Supreme Court order on headmen
SHILLONG: The Synjuk ki Nongsynshar Shnong Ka Bri u Hynniewtrep (SNSBH) has expressed gratitude to the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) for taking steps to file a Special Leave Petition before the Supreme Court with regards to the ruling of the High Court of Meghalaya dated December 10, 2014 and January 13, 2016 respectively.
The SNSBH has welcomed the ruling of the Supreme Court of India dated February 12 which restores the powers and functions of the traditional Dorbar and the traditional headmen in Meghalaya as per rules and laws framed by the District Council under the Sixth Schedule to the Constitution.
‘Drive against tinted glasses to continue in city’
SHILLONG: Shillong Traffic police will intensify its drive against use of black tinted glasses on the vehicles in Shillong city.
Additional SP (Traffic) Sacheng R Marak said despite the drive launched by traffic police couple of years back, vehicles in the city continue to use black tinted glasses.
According to Marak, the traffic personnel, apart from checking for tinted glasses, are also checking the documents of the vehicles.
Besides, the Shillong Traffic branch is also focused on eliminating the menace of drunken driving to reduce road accidents.
He also informed that breath analyzers have been sanctioned in all the Traffic branches and would be sanctioned in all Thanas in the near future.
Bathroom fittings stolen from Tura housing colony
SHILLONG: Unknown miscreants have stolen bathroom fittings valued around Rs 1,36,800 from the newly constructed housing colony at Dakopgre, Tura.
Police said the incident happened in February itself.
Shyamal Choudhury, Project Engineer, M/s Srinath Builders & Housing Co. Pvt. Ltd., has filed a complaint in this regard.
When contacted, West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Pravin Bakshi recalled that earlier there were incidents when labourers were assaulted at the site. He said miscreants took advantage of the remote location of the housing colony to commit the theft.
“We are keeping vigil on the site and we will ask the police for patrolling in the area,” he said, adding that the district administration will ask the Urban Affairs department to complete all construction work at the earliest.
BSF awaits central funds for bridge construction
SHILLONG: The Border Security Force is waiting for sanction of funds from the Centre for construction of a bridge across river Jadukota in Ranikor.
BSF Meghalaya Frontier IG Sudesh Kumar on Tuesday said the sanction for the bridge is likely to come after March.
It may be mentioned that a team from the Union Ministry of Home Affairs had earlier conducted a survey for a proposed bridge across river Jadukota.
According to Sudesh Kumar, the bridge would be of great help to the BSF as well as local villagers.
Presently, local residents with two wheelers have to shell out Rs 100 for crossing the river on boat.
Though a wooden bridge exists across the river, people avoid the bridge due to its dilapidated condition.
The BSF has forwarded a proposal of Rs 100 crore to the Centre for the proposed bridge.
Biker killed in road mishap in SWGH
SHILLONG: A motorcycle rider died on the spot following a collision with a dumper truck in South West Khasi Hills.
Police said the incident happened on February 3 when the dumper truck (ML-07A-9753) driven by Jiten Das (27) collided head-on with a motorcycle (AS-01-1279) ridden by Surnimol Koch (40) at Baishpara village.
The motorcycle rider died on the spot, while a pillion rider sustained injuries and was admitted at Garobadha PHC.
The cadaver was sent to Tura Civil Hospital for post mortem examination. Police have arrested the driver of the dumper truck.
