SHILLONG: The Langrin Youth Welfare Association (LYWA) has taken strong exception to the groups of representatives who demanded better road connectivity in South West Khasi Hills district by claiming that the latter supported uranium mining.
Alleging that their demand for better road connectivity is for facilitating uranium, the LYWA called the representatives of the villages “wolves in sheep’s clothing as they support uranium mining in the name of better road connectivity”.
Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has pointed in its report that the road project sanctioned for Rs 485.28 crore is meant for uranium mining in Meghalaya.
LYWA slammed the representatives who are also village chiefs for urging the CEM of Khasi Hill Autonomous District PN Syiem to issue No Objection Certificate (NOC) to the PWD department to begin the two lane road project from Nongstoin-Mawthabah.
The association has urged the CEM KHADC to not issue any certificates in this regard.
Stating that the village chiefs’ claim of difficulties faced due to the dilapidated road condition is a tactic to invite sympathy which will enable the authorities concerned to swiftly repair the bad road.
The association pointed out that the village chiefs are focused on getting the benefits from tapping of uranium deposits which will bring in riches to them.
LYWA also termed the chiefs as agents of Uranium Corporation of India.
The association said they will protest any venture that leads to uranium mining and expressed concern over the health conditions of the residents if uranium is mined in the name of better road connectivity.
