Driver who hit CM’s car released on bail

SHILLONG: After a week of confinement, the driver arrested for bumping into Chief Minister’s Mukul Sangma’s vehicle was released on bail from the Shillong jail here on Thursday.
Jeslakur Mawdoh was arrested for reckless driving on February 11.
Post his release Mawdoh said that his vehicle hit the official car of the Chief Minister after he tried to make way for a biker.
The driver, who is now being charged with rash and negligent driving, was earlier booked under section 307 IPC (attempt to murder), but following protests from various quarters, police were compelled to drop the charge.
Accompanied by his parents and other family members, a visibly disturbed Mawdoh also denied that he was guilty of rash driving.
“When the police took me they asked me whether I had any intention to kill the Chief Minister. I had no such intentions, I knew that a VIP vehicle  with a siren is approaching and I had to make way. I was just trying to make way for the biker,” Mawdoh, a father of two children, one two years old and the other barely four months old, said.
The parents who were beside him were eager to take him home. His father stated that the family was in a bad financial shape and following Mawdoh’s arrest had to borrow money to meet its needs.
