SHILLONG: Meghalaya Governor V. Shanmuganathan urged upon “scholars and intellectuals” to do thorough research on popular figures of the region including U Soso Tham and Srimanta Sankardev among others.
The Governor was speaking after inaugurating a two-day national seminar on ‘Intellectual Traditions of the Northeast: Its Influences and Impact’ at the English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU), here on Saturday.
“The scholars and intellectuals should explore and undertake thorough research on popular figures of the region including U Soso Tham, Sankardev and others whose lives and works have had a great influence on the communities that they belong to,” Shanmuganathan said while addressing the gathering.
The seminar is being organised by the Indian Institute of Advanced Studies, Shimla in collaboration with EFLU, Shillong.
The Governor also reminded the gathering about the richness and diversity that India in general, and the North Eastern region in particular, has in terms of traditions and belief systems.
He also stressed on the fact as to how majority of the North Easterners are attached to nature and all its creations; namely the land, the waters as well as all living and non living creations they come into contact in their day to day life.
Prior to his address, the Governor initiated a lively interaction with the scholars representing different universities from across India. Others who spoke on the occasion included Prof. Udayon Mishra, member of the governing body of the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library, New Delhi and Prof. K.C Baral, Director of EFLU Shillong.
