SHILLONG: The 2,852 Sonar Lochhar or the New Year celebration by the Tamang community began on Sunday at U Soso Tham auditorium. The celebration started on February 9 and will culminate on February 23, marking a 15- day celebration from New Moon to the Full Moon.
“In a way to preserve our cultural and religious heritage, we have organized the celebration,” Sanyal Tamang, president of Meghalaya Tamang Buddhist Association (youth wing) said while speaking to reporters.
The theme of the programme was “Save Tamang Culture” in a bid to revive the Tamang culture where some elders of the community believe is declining.
On the other hand, Tamang has informed that there are over 800-900 Tamang communities residing in Shillong, whereas they were granted ST status in West Bengal and Sikkim.
