SHILLONG: The State government is working on a proposal to provide Wi-Fi connectivity in different parts of Shillong and Tura.
Commissioner and Secretary, IT department, D.P. Wahlang, on Tuesday said the department is currently doing a technical evaluation of the entire programme and very soon commercial bidding for the project will be opened.
Earlier, Chief Minister Mukul Sangma had asserted that the government was aiming to transform Shillong into a ‘digital city’ by providing Wi-Fi connections in all schools and across the city and other tourist spots so that people can have access to internet at all times.
The proposed scheme is being designed to empower students with the internet to encourage e-learning.
He further informed that six Wi-Fi zones in Shillong and three Wi-Fi zones in Tura will be created under the proposed project.
The official mentioned that since the programme is quite a complex one, the government is taking some time to come up with a concrete plan of action.
