International Women’s Day observed in city

SHILLONG: The Khasi Cultural & Social Service Society observed International Women’s Day 2016 on Tuesday.
Speaking on the occasion, Sweetymon Rynjah, member of Khasi Author’s Society, said the U.N.O. has kept this day as the day for women and urged women and men to co-operate for the betterment of the society.
Theilin Phanbuh, Chairperson, Meghalaya State Commission for Women, talked on women vendors and daily wage labourers and added that the Commission was conducting a survey on the social and economic empowerment of women. She also advocated for gender equality.
Dundee Cliff Khongsit, FKJGP general secretary, said violence against women has prompted the U.N.O. to declare a special day for women.
Meanwhile, the Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA), Shillong in collaboration with North East Network (NEN) observed the Day by organizing a poster competition on the YWCA campus in the city. The theme of the competition was ‘Pledge for Parity’ whose main objective was to create awareness on violence against women.
The BSF Wives Welfare Association (BWWA) also celebrated International Women’s Day at Frontier HQ, BSF Shillong, Umpling.
