SHILLONG: The Supreme Court in 1999 had asked Meghalaya Government to conduct   Municipal polls in Shillong within 6 months, but the directive has not  been  adhered to by the Government. Now, an individual Pawan Sharma has filed a petition on the matter before the High Court of Meghalaya. Taking up the petition, the Chief Justice  Dinesh Maheshwari on Tuesday asked the High Court office to treat it as PIL.
The  Chief Justice said on the submissions sought to be made, it is but clear that the petition is not espousing any personal cause of the petitioner, and essentially it appears to be a public interest litigation “The office shall register this matter as PIL petition and place it appropriately,” the Court order said. Meanwhile, the lawyer of the petitioner informed on Wednesday that since the Court said the petition will be treated as a PIL, it will be listed before the Division Bench of the Court
