SHILLONG: Various Garo Hills-based NGOs have dared Songsak MLA Nihim D Shira to file a case against leaders of the GSU, ADE, FKJGP, FAF and AYWO for their involvement in the boycott of elections to the GHADC.
The statement came from the NGOs after Opposition legislators from Garo Hills expressed concern over the delay on the part of the police in taking action against those involved in the boycott of elections to the GHADC even as Home Minister Roshan Warjri assured that the status of the case will be examined.
“If Nihim D. Shira wants our blood, he is welcome to file a case against our leaders,” the NGOs said.
The NGOs added that they failed to create an effective referendum on the issue as 69 per cent of the electorate participated in the GHADC election.
“But all things considered, did we do any injustice by calling for a boycott simply by using our right to freedom of speech and to create awareness by touring Garo Hills,” the NGOs asked.
The NGOs also took exception to South Tura MLA, John Leslee Sangma’s statement in the Assembly expressing concern over indigenous people not being allowed to cast votes in the Council polls. Sangma had also said that some political parties were behind the boycott.
“We had hoped that the South Tura MLA would always stand for the Garos. We never expected that the MLA would bay for our blood for fighting for the Garo people, which we believe is within our rights to create awareness,” the NGOs said.
They also dared Independent MLA Saleng A. Sangma to fight for the cause of the Garos even if that meant incarceration for him.
