SHILLONG: Children in Meghalaya continue to become the soft target of miscreants who take advantage of the innocence of children to commit various crimes against them.
As per police statistics, 219 cases of crimes against children were reported in the State in 2015.
The statistics reveal that there were 36 cases of rape and 35 cases of abduction or kidnapping of minors.
In addition, 100 cases were registered under the Protection Of Children from Sexual Offences (POSCO) Act.
The condition was, however, more serious in 2014, when 478 cognizable crimes were reported against children in the State.
Police statistics, incidentally, reveal that the crime graph against children in the State has been on an upswing.
Data reveal that between 2002 and 2008, only 394 cases were registered against children in the State but in the recent years the number of cases of crimes committed against children has seen a gradual increase.
