SHILLONG: With the State government set to table the Meghalaya (Benami Transactions Prohibition) (Amendment) Bill, 2016 and the Meghalaya Tenants Verification and Regulation Bill, 2016 in the ongoing Assembly session, a consortium of pressure groups on Tuesday held a meeting with the chief minister to push for necessary amendments.
“In relation to the Meghalaya (Benami Transactions Prohibition) (Amendment) Bill, 2016 there will be certain amendment with the addition of the word ‘detection’ and hence this Bill needs assent of the President of India,” FKJGP president Joe Marwein said after the meeting.
KSU chief Daniel Khyriem maintained that they were steadfast in their demand to check immigration and influx into the State, even as he stated that steps and measures needed to be taken to identify genuine Indian citizens.
“We have agreed on the amendments by the State government but the reviewing of the Act needs to be done,” Khyriem said.
He stated that the objective and spirit of the Bill should not be changed, and said, “The daily wage labourers will have to obtain work permit and tenants will have to show valid documents at the police station and we urge the opposition members to support the Bills.”
Echoing Khyriem, GSU president Tengsak G Momin also raised the issue of deportation of illegal migrants and said, “There has to be a mechanism to deport the migrants.”
