Editor,
I am one of the many job aspirants of this State and literally I have given up hope on getting a Government job. In this gloomy search for job, a ray of hope appeared in the form of the Police Department coming up with numerous job opportunities. In the last two years or so, my personal experience is that the only department with FAIR recruitment process is the Police Department. I had closely followed the recently concluded recruitment to posts in the Prisons and I must say kudos to the Department. They uploaded the marks immediately after every event and that too on a daily basis. I compared each and every mark that was uploaded and found that it did tally with the one that was declared. Coming to the appointment of the son of DG Prisons as the Assistant Jailor, it amazes me as to there is a hue and cry when he was selected after having fulfilled all the criteria’s laid down by the Prison Department for the that post. Most importantly he cleared all the levels of tests. Although the DG Prison has clarified that his son was disqualified, the question is why should he be disqualified? Is it because he is the son of the DG? If that is the case then I’m glad that my dad is not the Chief Minister otherwise I will be jobless in this life. “How can a person holding the position of Chairman of the Central Recruitment Board clear the name of his son?” was the quote. Well the answer is, “He qualified.” It’s as simple as that and personally I’m not against it although I also had applied for the same post and did not qualify. The only right thing to have been done is for the DG Prisons to recuse himself from being on the Interview Board

Parking tickets!
Editor,
We common people would always expect a parking picket when we park our vehicles anywhere in and around Shillong. It is not only expected but a ticket is to be handed to anyone to pays for parking of vehicle as per the law. However when I recently went to buy some groceries in Don Bosco Laitumkhrah, to be more precise one shop near Elegance beauty parlour, a few vehicles were parked there so I did the same. When I left, one chap asked for parking fees. My first reaction was to ask for the ticket. His reply was he noted it down in the register. I would like to know who authorizes such illegal collection of parking fees?

Shillong Golf Course
Editor,
Please refer to the remarks as appeared in the Shillong Times of March 14, 2016 ‘Golf Course bears the brunt of weekend picnickers’ onslaught’. Here are a few facts for the readers to appreciate. Foremost is that unlike other golf courses the Shillong Course is accessible 24 hours to the public causing problems of drunkenness, littering and such activities like cricket and football which damage the greens and fairways. The sprawling grounds, interspersed by clumps of vegetation which serve as the safe haven for anti social elements is the ideal escape venue from the legitimacy of the various lo- ‘‘When they call the roll in the Senate, the Senators do not know whether to answer ‘Present’ or ‘Not guilty.’’’ — Theodore Roosevelt calities. Be it also known that the malis in disregard of their normal duties have to pick up the litter which is heavy during weekends. At about this time last year, the present elected Board of Directors of the Shillong Club Ltd were greeted ominously by arsonists setting fire to about 60 lakh worth of valuable golf machinery meant for the upkeep of the greens and fairways besides the attack on the mid-way rest house which suffered considerable damage. There is a reference to legislator A.L. Hek who has not played golf for the last 1 ½ years. He has therefore missed 32 tournaments including a major IIM Tournament. He has to act not as a leader of a faction but to lead the community of golfers as President of the Shillong Golfers Association which has not met for more than a decade. It will be a sad day for the public if and when an inner wall is built restricting entry as would abate all manner of non-golfing activities. Lastly it is a happy thought that the younger group of golfers are taking the initiative to popularise the game through new ventures with the support of the present management
