SHILLONG: The State Government has passed the Meghalaya Compulsory Registration of Marriage Act, 2012 on October 5 last by the Cabinet but questions were raised as to the Act being kept in cold storage for more than five and a half months.
Maitshaphrang Movement convener, Michael Syiem said while addressing reporters on Friday, “It is appalling as to why the Bill ended up in cold storage, until now we were agitating.”
“In any case, the law should now be implemented. As for now we will campaign for the Equitable Distribution of Self Acquired and Ancestral Property Act, 2012,” added Michael Syiem
The Equitable Distribution of Self Acquired and Ancestral Property Act, 2012 was a demand since 1987.
“It seems without agitations, the State Government would not have come out and declared in the public domain about the Act,” Syiem said.
It may be reminded that the State Government, through the Information and Public Relation (IPR) on March 14 has informed that the rules for Meghalaya Compulsory Registration of Marriage Act, 2012 were framed since 2015.
