NEIGRIHMS bags Kayakalp award for cleanliness, hygiene

Team efforts paid the dividends, says Prof Ahangar

SHILLONG: The North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) Shillong  has added another feather in its cap when it bagged the 3rd position for its efforts in promoting cleanliness, hygiene, infection control and good health under the Centre’s ‘Kayakalp’ programme.
The Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, has bagged the top prize, while  All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi, bagged second prize.
The Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan programme was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on October 2, 2014 focusing on promoting cleanliness in public spaces.
Cleanliness of Hospital has got major impact in the overall outcome of patient care by preventing (infection and providing safe and healthy environment not only to the patients but for all the visitors who utilizes its services.
To recognize such effort of ensuring quality assurance at public health delivery facilities, the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Govt of India has launched a National initiative in the name of ‘Kayakalp which is a Clean Hospital Campaign launched by the Government of India in a view to change the mindset of the general public towards the Government Hospitals by improving the standard of cleanliness of the Hospitals. The scheme assesses the cleanliness of the Hospitals based on seven broad criteria and  59 sub-criteria with a total weightage of 650. Broadly the hospital is assessed on Hospital Upkeep, Sanitation and Hygiene, Hospital Support Services, Waste Management, Infection Control, Hygiene promotion and feedback mechanism from public on cleanliness.
For NEIGRIHM, the award, which comprises Rs 1crore, a trophy and a citation, was received by David Umdor, Deputy Director and  Dr Anil Chandra Phukon, Medical Superintendent  at a function held at NDMC Convention Center, New Delhi on March 16.
Meanwhile, the Director of the institute Prof. A.G. Ahangar, while speaking to The Shillong Times has offered his  gratitude to the patients, relatives, visitors and people of Meghalaya for their contribution to achieve this feat.  ” It is a result of team effort,” he said.
He also congratulated the entire NEIGRIHMS fraternity for their untiring effort and contribution for keeping the hospital clean and stepping in same pedestal with PGIMER, Chandigarh & AIIMS, New Delhi with the Goal to provide excellent Health Care Delivery to the Nation.
“This is a land mark achievement by NEIGRIHMS. The Award has brought accolades to the Institute and the North East in particular in terms of Cleanliness and a step forward  towards Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan” said Prof. Manuj Saikia, PRO & Chief spokesperson, NEIGRIHMS.
