Tenancy Bill referred to select committee

SHILLONG:  The Meghalaya Assembly on Wednesday referred the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Bill, 2016 to a select committee.
Speaker Abu Taher Mondal informed the House that a proposal was received from the leader of the Opposition Donkupar Roy to refer the Bill to a select committee.
Subsequently, Mondal also informed that Chief Minister Mukul Sangma also wrote a letter to him stating that the Bill may be referred to the Committee.
Later,  Sangma informed that the Select Committee would comprise legislators Metbah Lyngdoh, Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit, John Leslee K. Sangma, Jemino Mawthoh, Hopeful Bamon, Cherak Momin, Saleng A. Sangma, Embhahlang Syiemlieh and Nihim D. Shira.
Except for Bamon and Momin, all the other legislators belong to the Opposition.
It may be mentioned that the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Bill, 2016 was introduced in the State Assembly by the Chief Minister on   March 18
Under the Residents Safety and Security Bill, all persons residing in rented houses in the State shall have to furnish requisite documents to the local police station or to the local authority for necessary verification.
The Act, however, will not apply to any house or rental units owned by the Central or State governments or a government undertaking or any other government establishments.
Later, the House passed the Meghalaya Benami Transactions Prohibition Amendment Bill,  2016.
The Meghalaya (Benami Transactions Prohibition) Amendment Bill,  2016 focuses on taking stringent steps to prohibit carrying out proxy  business activities.
