Candle light vigil for rape/murder victim
SHILLONG: The busy road of Motphran on Thursday became an unlikely spot for residents of the city to gather to express solidarity with the family of Shailinia Kharrymba, the 19-year-old girl who raped and murdered recently.
Hundreds of people from all walks of life paid their homage to the girl with a candle light vigil in the evening.
Gilbert Dkhar, president, United Hynniewtrep Movement (UTM) while speaking at the gathering condemned the brutal killing and called upon the society to stand united against the sharp rise in cases of violence against women.
Speaking on the solemn occasion, Thomas Passah, Khun Hynniewtrep National Youth Movement (KHNAM) Wing president, said, “A heavy price was paid by Shailinia due to our silence. We have to be responsible citizens and for the State Government to come up with a strong law to fight violence against women.”
A relative of the victim expressed gratitude for the support to the family and urge the society to persuade the Government to frame an appropriate legislation to deter the occurrence of such crimes.
While taking part in the candle light vigil, a lady called upon parents not to shield their kin “if they commit similar type of crime against women”.
Headman of 4th Mile Upper Shillong, L Nongtraw took note of the high incidences of crimes in the state was cautious as he said that proper documents should be produce to the local Dorbar by the new residents for scrutiny.
A similar candle light vigil was held at Upper Shillong on Wednesday.
