Jorhat: The prestigious Jorhat Assembly constituency in Assam is all set to witness a straight fight between Congress candidate Rana Goswami and BJP contestant Hitendra Nath Goswami with both leaving no stones unturned to woo voters for the April 4 poll.
Having won the Assembly seat three times in a row, sitting MLA Rana Goswami is working day and night to woo voters for their mandate to retain his seat, while his rival Hitendra Nath Goswami is also striving hard to return to Dispur riding on the wave for change.
CPI’s Nirmal Chandra Gogoi, Independents Jibon Chandra Sarma, Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta, besides Prodyut Kumar Bora who left BJP are also campaigning intensely for upcoming polls. Goswami is banking in on his proximity to the people of the constituency. He greets everyone by their family names, besides being known for his helpful attitude. Many voters allege BJP’s Hitendra Nath Goswami, a two time Asom Gana Parishad minister, has not done much for Jorhat when he was a minister and remained mostly absent from his constituency.
Goswami, a senior Guwahati High Court lawyer, seems to have a clean image and strong family background. Altogether seven contestants are in the fray for Jorhat constituency with 1,59,958 voters, including 79,682 women. (PTI)
