SHILLONG: The New Shillong Township area which was marked long back to decongest Shillong city is finally witnessing some development.
A visit to the area reveals that construction work is on for different projects, land for which were allotted to various agencies and departments by the court.
To name a few, work is going on for IIM Shillong, NIFT, International Centre for Performing Arts and Culture projects even as the foundation stone for the Central Institute of Hindi was also laid in the area this week. Speaking on the matter, Urban Affairs Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh said that departments which have been allotted land have been asked to start building their infrastructure immediately failing which they would be liable to lose the possession of the area. It was also evident that roads were being constructed in the area. However, the main road leading to New Shillong Township is still small and full of potholes.
It has been learnt that the State Government recently sanctioned two-three roads in the NST. Besides, the Government is also keen to construct a 32-metre road in the area starting from Nongmynsong
